Eve Arnold was born in Philadelphia in 1912 and was one of the most renowned photographers of her time. She began her career as a photojournalist, working for magazines such as Time and Life. She later became a member of the prestigious Magnum Photos agency.

The city of Turin is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the famous photographer, consisting of about 170 photographs, some of which have never been seen before. It is hosted by Camera a center dedicated to international photography, equipped with an image training center that offers meetings, workshops and laboratories. It aims to enhance and foster the preservation of photographic heritage.

This carefully curated show brings together the photographer’s most famous reportages. This includes the Black is Beautiful series from 1968, which stands as a symbol of the emergence of African American identity pride, and the monumental Behind the veil from 1969, made with writer Lesley Blanch during a trip to chronicle the women of Afghanistan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan and Turkmenistan.

In general, what makes Eve Arnold’s photography unique is her focus on her subjects, particularly women.

These subjects range from mothers to little girls, from models to working women, from divas to schoolgirls.

Eve Arnold captures their essence authentically and outside of stereotypes, as evidenced by her reports on the story of Yvonne Sylvain, Haiti’s first female doctor, and her moving images taken inside maternity wards in hospitals around the world.

This collection presented in Torino is a unique opportunity to admire the work of this photographer. After all she is one of the most important ones of the 20th century and to reflect on the universal themes her images represent.

One of Arnold’s most famous works is her series of photographs of Marilyn Monroe, taken over a 10-year period. These images offer a rare glimpse into the Hollywood icon’s private life and have become some of the most iconic images of Monroe. Some of these are featured in the exhibition.

Arnold also documented some of the most significant events of the 20th century, such as the civil rights movement in the United States and the struggle for independence in India. His images of these events have become important historical documents, capturing the emotions and struggles of the people involved.

As a woman in a man-dominated field, Eve Arnold broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of female photographers.

Throughout her career she has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Order of Merit from the British government and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Magazine Photographers.

Overall, Eve Arnold’s work represents a unique and powerful perspective on the world. Her legacy as a pioneering photographer continues to inspire and influence photographers around the world.
